Kings Lynn is an ancient maritime port, dating back to the 12th century it was one of England's foremost ports with strong ties to the German Hanseatic League
King's Lynn over the years, the town has been known variously as Bishop's Lynn and Lynn Regis; to local people it is simply Lynn.
King's Lynn is situated on the river Great Ouse some 35miles north-east of Peterborough - 44 miles west of Norwich . with London 110 miles to the south.
Kings Lynn is situated on the edge of the Fens which were drained in the 17th century and now make a large area known as the Fenlands that covers part of the county of Norfolk - Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire.
The urban area that makes up the town of King's Lynn has an area of 28.41 sq kilometre. The 2001 census shows Kings Lynn with a population of 34,564 inhabiting 15'285 households, since then major development of new homes in South Lynn will increase these numbers.
On Tuesdays - Fridays and Saturdays the actual population expands considerably with shoppers and visitors to the town on these market days, Kings Lynn's town centre which has 400 plus shops, cafes, restaurants, banks and services is currently enjoying over 120'000 shoppers visiting this compact town centre every week.
Kings Lynn is currently undergoing major development, the Nar scheme to the south of Kings Lynn, a huge swathe of brown-field land is being transformed into a housing development (including attractive contemporary apartments lining the River Nar), a business park, parkland, a school, shops . A 250-berth marina, surrounded by apartments, hotel, shops and bar/restaurant is also planned.
The Vancouver Shopping Centre (Named after Captain George Vancouver who was born in New Conduit Street on June 22nd 1757) that covers St Dominic's Square - Broad Street - New Conduit Street and part of Baxters Plain, has just been given a £50'000'000 refurbishment attracting many multi national retailers into this refurbished shopping centre. The Vancouver Shopping Centre consisting of Broad Street which connects to Norfolk Street which in turn connects to High Street which then connects to The Vancouver Shopping Centre at New Conduit Street forming the main central shopping area.
